F104G Starfighter Belgium 1/32
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was one of the most famous single-engine supersonic American fighter aircraft of the 20th century. Designed by Lockheed as a successor to the F-100 Super Sabre, the aircraft served with the USAF from 1958 to 1967 during the Cold War. It was primarily used as a fighter-bomber, but there were also versions modified for a fighter role. The US used the F-104 in combat operations during the Vietnam War, among other activities, and it served with the Air National Guard until its final phase-out in the US in 1975.
The Starfighter was NATO's standard fighter-bomber from 1961 to 1985, after which it was replaced, usually by the F-16. The aircraft also served for many years with the Belgian Air Force and the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The F-104 held the dubious distinction of having the worst safety record. The bribery scandals that later came to light – which had occurred in several cases with European purchases – also did not do justice to the name and fame of the aircraft.
