Cagiva: Castiglioni Giovanni Varese, Cagiva Motor S.p.A, Schiranna, Varese (1978-present) is a company founded in 1928 that entered the motorcycle market in 1978 with the acquisition of the Aermacchi factory in Varese, then owned by Harley-Davidson. The first machines were called HD-Cagiva. Initially, Aermacchi engines were used.

The 1987 Dakar Rally, also known as the 1987 Paris-Dakar Rally, was the 9th running of the Dakar Rally event. The rally was won by 1981 World Rally Champion Ari Vatanen.
